Abstract

The study aimed to examine the depression rates of freshmen students in the Departments of Islamic Education and Physical Education in the College of Education at Sultan Qaboos University. Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) has been administered two times (beginning and end of the fall semester of 2003/2004) using 108 freshmen students from the departments of Islamic Sciences, and Physical Education's. The results showed low depression rates for all sampled students. Two-way Split-plot design analysis of variance showed a statistical difference between students of Physical Education and their counterparts in the Islamic Education in depression rates at both two administrations of the BDl. Results showed that the students of Physical Education department had less depression rates than the students of the Islamic Education.
