The Degree of Coverage of the Components of Scientific Literacy Included at the Science Textbook of the Class in Jordan and the Extent to Which Students in Al-Qaser Region Have Obtained it
Abstract
This study aimed at determining the degree of coverage of the four components of scientific literacy: the knowledge nature of science, the investigative nature of science, the thinking nature of science, and the interaction between science, technology, and society in the Science Textbook of Eighth-Grade in Jordan. It also aimed at determining the extent to which student in Al-Qaser Region have obtained them. To achieve these aims a model for content analysis of the Science Textbook was developed and a scientific literacy test was constructed. The Model and the test validity and reliability have been assured. The test was administered on a sample consisting of (705) students from Al-Qaser schools at the end of the second semester of the scholastic year 2004/2005. The results of the study showed that scientific literacy component was covered by the Science Textbook of Eighth-Grade, and the large percentage was in the case of knowledge nature of science followed by another component. The results also showed that the level of scientific literacy of the Eighth-Grade students was low.
