Coping Styles to Stressful Situations among Adolescents in Bahraini Society
Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the prevalent coping styles among Bahraini adolescents. It also aimed to study the differences in coping styles according to gender and developmental stage. The Adolescents Coping Scale (ACS) developed by Frydenberg and Lewis( 1993) was administered to a randomly selected sample of (292) Bahraini students. The results of the study showed that the most prevalent coping styles among Bahraini adolescents were: Seeking Spiritual Support, Seeking to Belong, and Focusing on Work. The least prevalent coping styles were: Seeking Professional Help, Not Coping, and Ignoring. Using MANOVA, results showed that there was a significant effect for gender, developmental level, and gender x developmental level interaction. Further analysis showed that females used seeking Spiritual Support and Tension Reduction, whereas males used Seeking Belonging, Focusing on Work, and Joining Group Activities. Using Scheffe test, results showed that adolescents at the stage of late adolescence used Focusing on Work, whereas adolescents at the stage of middle adolescence used Seeking Support from Others.
