The Quranic Circles in Damascus of the Levant: Their Importance, Virtue, Historical Origins, Curriculums for Memorization, and Impact
Abstract
Allah honoured Muslims with the Quran and for their efforts to serve by its memorization, publication and learning and teaching it. This was carried out in every age by several scholars who dedicated their whole lives for the cause of dissemination and preservation of the teachings of the Quran. These scholars were beacons of light for their students and were found in all important cities of the Muslim world. Ibn al-Jazari was one such scholar who was known as the Master of the Reciters of Quran in Damascus but with his death, activities related to the art of Quranic recitation reduced a great deal until it was revived by Aal al-Halwani and their disciples about two centuries ago. This paper shall discuss the efforts made the Syrian scholars in the dissemination of Quranic Councils throughout Damascus and the Syrian model as one worthy of being pursued in this regard.
