AI Tools Use

Instructions on The Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools

In recognition of the importance of benefiting from the broad opportunities that the integration of artificial tools (AI) in scientific research, and in line with the “ Instructions on The Use of Generative AI Tools at Qatar University” issued by the Office of Qatar University President on 25/15/2025, Qatar University Press adopts clear instructions with regard to  the use of AI tools in a controlled, responsible, and prudent manner in research submitted for publication. These instructions aim to foster an integrated research environment while ensuring adherence to the highest standards of scientific integrity and ethical conduct.

These instructions set out the regulatory, ethical and scientific standards for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in research submitted to the International Review of Law.

These instructions shall be reviewed periodically, or whenever necessary, to ensure alignment with relevant technological and legal developments in the field of generative AI.

  1. Permissible Uses of AI Tools

Authors may use AI tools provided that they adhere to research ethics and scientific integrity, respect for intellectual property rights, protection of privacy, as well as the confidentiality of data and content submitted to such tools. This includes published and unpublished research, and any personally identifiable information. Authors must ensure that only limited permissions are granted to AI tools in relation to the input content.

The use of AI tools is permitted exclusively for the following purposes:

    • Linguistic review and improvement language quality and clarity.
    • Assisting with data analysis and visual representation, provided that the data are not generated by AI tools nor reproduced verbatim.
    • >Supporting literature review by identifying relevant sources provided they are verified from the original sources.
    • Suggesting enhancements to image quality without generating images or reproducing them verbatim, while editors reserve the right to request original images when necessary.

While doing so, the author/s must adhere to the following:

    • Verify the accuracy and validity of any AI-assisted output and assume full responsibility for the content of their work.
    • Ensure impartiality, maintain confidentiality, and protect personal data.
    • Carefully review all outputs generated by AI tools and verify their accuracy, completeness, neutrality, and sources.
  2. Prohibited Uses of AI of AI tools

The use of AI tools is prohibited in the following cases:

    • Generating substantial portions of the research text.
    • Producing fabricated data, references, or images.
    • Any use that compromises the originality or integrity of the research or violates ethical standards.
    • Relying on AI tools to generate research ideas and design the study.
    • Producing figures or images entirely generated by AI.
    • Using generative AI tools to produce content, images, videos, or programming code and submitting them as original scholarly work.
    • Citing AI-generated references that are unverified incorrect or fabricated.

Only natural persons over the age of 18 can be listed as authors; AI tools cannot be credited with authorship.

  3. Disclosure of the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools

Authors are required to acknowledge and clearly disclose the use of AI tools transparently throughout the following stages of the publishing process:

    • Author Declaration Form upon submission. The author must specify which tool was used, the percentage of usage, at which stage, and for what purpose.
    • The Methods section (for empirical studies) if any, and
    • The final declaration statements of the published articles.

If no generative AI tool was used, disclosure is not required.

    Example of disclosure:
“In the preparation of this research, the author(s) used [tool name] for [purpose]. The author(s) reviewed and edited all generated content and take full responsibility for the content of the publication.”

  4. Conclusion

Accordingly, the International Review of Law reserves the right to examine research submitted for publication to verify the use of AI tools, using the systems available at Qatar University. The use of AI tools to generate scientific content and submit it as the author’s own original work, or in violation of the provisions stated above, is considered a form of academic plagiarism and may subject the author to investigation and possible retraction of the article.
