Abstract

This study aimed to bring to the light the image of the west in the Jordanian basic and secondary history textbooks, using content analysis procedures. The problem statement was put out in the light of the following two questions: (1) how many ideas -related to the westare included in the Jordanian basic and secondary history textbooks? (2) According to these ideas, what is the nature of the image of west in those textbooks? The sample of the study consisted of seven textbooks. To achieve the aim of this study, a special instrument was designed for analyzing the content. The unit of idea was used for the purpose of analysis. Descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages and correlation coefficient) were employed to answer the questions. Data analysis showed that the majority (67.09%) of these ideas were related to the domain of political and military life , whereas (19,55%) and (13,37%) of these ideas were related to the domain of social, cultural and religious life and economic life respectively. Furthermore, the findings indicated that the image of the west in the Jordanian history textbooks was not balanced in view of its elements and components. On other words, political and military were dominate, whereas the social, cultural, religious, and- economic questions were poorly handled.
