Abstract
This study aimed to identify the level of awareness among basic stage teachers in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan regarding the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) standards for educating gifted students, from the teachers’ perspectives. The study adopted a descriptive survey design, and the researchers developed a questionnaire to measure the degree of the teachers’ awareness of these standards. The questionnaire consisted of (42) items distributed across seven domains: learner development and individual learning differences, learning environments, curricular content knowledge, assessment, instructional planning and strategies, professional learning and ethical practice and collaboration. The study sample comprised (307) male and female basic stage teachers (from Grade 4 to Grade 10) working in the Giza Directorate of Education in Jordan. The results indicated that the teachers’ awareness of the NAGC standards was high across all domains. The findings also revealed statistically significant differences at the level (α = 0.05) in the level of awareness attributed to the gender variable, in favour of females, while no statistically significant differences were found in the total score attributed to the variables of teachers’ specialisation or years of experience. Since the study relied on a questionnaire as its data collection tool, the results reflect the level of awareness as self-reported by the participants and do not necessarily indicate the actual extent to which these standards are implemented in classroom practice.
