Abstract

The purpose of the study was to identify the irrational beliefs in students at the College of Education and whether these irrational thoughts differ according to sex. The study also examined the relationship between irrational thoughts and certain emotional disorders including depression, anxiety trait, test anxiety and to determine whether you can make predictions about students irrational thought from these disorders. The sample of the study consisted of 204 male and female students who completed the irrational thought Inventory Developed by Alreyhani in 1985 , the Arabic version of Beck Inventory scale adapted , by Ghareeb 1985, the Arabic version of Anxiety Trait Inventory by alboheiri , the Anxiety'Test scale by Alzahar and Hoster 1985 and the Arabic version of Alienation by Ameer and Hassan 1989. Using several statistical analyses the results were as follows: (1) The prevalence percentage of irrational thought amongst students •ranges from 10.29% ,at minimum level, to 48.5 , at maximum level, and that males were higher than females in only one irrational thought. (2) There was no sex difference in overall general irrational thoughts., but there was a statistically positive correlation between irrational thoughts and emotional dosordere. Multiple Regression analysis indicated that irrational thought were significant predictors of all emotional disorder variables amongst students. Results were discussed in terms of review of literature. Several recommendations and proposals were made.
