The Contribution of Parenting Styles in Predicting Emotional Intelligence among University Students in the Gaza Strip

Abstract
The current study aimed to identify the predictive ability of parenting styles of emotional intelligence among university students. The researchers used a descriptive correlational predictive approach, and the study sample consisted of 473 male and female university students (254 males, 219 females). The researchers developed a Parenting Styles Scale and used the Emotional Intelligence Scale (Schutte et al., 1998). The results showed that there is a high level of emotional intelligence among university students. The results also showed that there is a positive significant association between the democratic and overprotective parenting styles and emotional intelligence in fathers and mothers, and a negative significant association between the authoritarian parenting style and emotional intelligence only in mothers. In contrast, the results showed no correlation between the neglectful or authoritarian parenting style and emotional intelligence. The results also indicated that there are no statistically significant differences in parenting styles (father and mother) and emotional intelligence due to the variables (gender, specialty). Further, the results revealed that the most predictive style of emotional intelligence was the democratic style (23.7%) for mother, then the democratic style (18%) for father, and least one was the overprotective style (8%) for mother. The researchers recommend implementing seminars and workshops for parents about the importance of parental styles which should be used with their sons and daughters in all aspects of their daily life. The researchers also recommend implementing workshops and seminars for students related to emotional intelligence and the skills necessary to develop it.
