Effect of aerobic exercise training program on bone density in perimenopausal females
Abstract
Women who do regular physical exercise appear to have a reduced risk of osteoporosis. Although data investigating this topic are limited, on balance, the results from published randomized studies strongly support the view that regular exercise is effective in preventing and treating osteoporosis. However, many questions remain unanswered, and further trials are needed to more closely define the optimal regimen, and type of exercise. This Study aims at studying the effect of aerobic exercise on bone mineral density in perimenopausal females. 30 perimenopausal female patients were divided into 2 groups as following: Study Group participating in aerobic exercise program. And a Control group with no exercise. DEXA apparatus was used to measure bone density before, and after the program. Bone density increased significantly in the study group (2.2%), while it decreased in the control group (2.1 %). Aerobic exercise training programs have a significant role in increasing bone mineral density in the perimenopausal women. Considering the relative safety and other health benefits of regular aerobic exercise, encouraging older women to take up regular aerobic exercise seems to constitute a good advice.
