الملخص
يمكننا إجراء مقارنة بين عدم قدرة العديد من المجتمعات البشرية على التعامل مع القضايا البيئية المعاصرة (كالتغير المناخي والجوائح الصحية واستعمال الأراضي وإدارة الحراج والموارد المتجددة وغير المتجددة والإسكان والفقر والتخطيط الحضري)، ووجهة نظر العديد من المهنيين والسياسيين ممن لديهم قناعة بأنهم يمتلكون "الإجابات الصحيحة"، إلا أن عدم التوافق حول التغير المناخي ومخزون الموارد المتجددة وغير المتجددة وعدم نجاح ما يسمى بالتجمعات السكنية النموذجية ومشاريع التخطيط الحضري التي أنشئت منذ خمسينيات القرن الماضي في بلدان تتبع اقتصاد السوق الاشتراكي أو اقتصاد السوق الحر يشير بوضوح إلى الحاجة إلى أفكار وأساليب عمل وأهداف ومعايير جديدة في مجال البحث العلمي والممارسة المهنية معًا. وترتبط تحديات القضايا آنفة الذكر بمدى تعقيد هذه القضايا وتجزئ المعرفة المهنية والعلمية وتقسيم المسؤوليات بناء على القطاعات في المجتمع المعاصر وزيادة تنوع طبيعة السياقات المجتمعية التي يعيشها الناس. كما أدّى الافتقار إلى التعاون الفعال بين العلماء والمهنيين وواضعي السياسات إلى "فجوة تطبيقية" في القطاعات التي تتعامل مع البيئات الطبيعية والبيئات بشرية الصنع. تناقش هذه المقالة القيمة المضافة للإسهامات البينية والعابرة للتخصصات وكذلك التحديات التي عادة ما يواجهها أولئك الذين يرغبون بتنفيذها للتعامل مع القضايا المعقدة للعالم الحقيقي.
