«Irony» and «Discourse of Antithesis» in Nizar Qabbani's Poetry: An analytical and Critical Study
Abstract
This study hypothesizes that irony and the discourse of contrast are two sides of the same coin. This does not imply that they are identical. Rather, they represent the same value. Every side has its own features. Therefore, they are two images of the same subject, namely contrast in its general sense. Both are transformative and generative discourse structures based on the concept of contrast . These two discourse structures have generalities and specificities. Discourse of Antithesis as a phenomenon is more general and comprehensive than Irony . The poetic discourse of Nizar Qabbani is a discourse of contrast in general. It has been manifested through a number of techniques the most prominent of which is irony techniques in its various features. Highlighting the similarities and differences between them will be made through the study of each of them separately. The presence track of each will be made clear. The study is not contrastive but rather analytical and critical in the sense that it reveals the salient features of irony on the one hand, and the presence the discourse of antithesis in all its forms on the other hand. This critical study will follow the descriptive and analytical approach and will take the advantage of the psychological approach to uncover the motives of NizarQabbani in his use of irony and the discourse of contrast in his poems.
