The ‘epic-message’ and the Structural Typography In Qatari novel ‘From Ancient Sailor to you’ as an Example
Abstract
This study tackles a type of structural and typographic experimentation and its relation to identity. This type mixes the genre of personal messages with the genre of ‘epic’ folktales, in particularly the Arabian nights. The author uses the word ‘epic-message’ to refer to this type. This type emerged as a reflection of Arab and international political changes on narrative texts, especially the Second Gulf War, September 2001, and the Arab spring revolutions. Due to these events, experimentation in novel became a major concern for Arab novelists. Because of these successive events, in which the enemy became a friend and vice versa, novelists were inspired by genres that is more related to the nature of reality as well as the formation of narrative experimental. The study traces the early beginnings of this type, with a particular interest on the Qatari novel. The study tackles in particular the novel From the Old sailor to You by Dalal Khalifa from the following dimensions: - The concept and bases: Which deals with the concept of blended narrative formation and its relation to the new forms of fiction as well as the reasons that lead to the widespread of this structural experimentation. - The Typographical formation in the novel: which appears in its calligraphy, paintings, other artistic works, and their meanings. - The semantic formation in the novel: which appears in the socio-political meanings of the novel. We look forward to forming a vision of criticism that tackles the narrative phenomena based on imperative criteria that is inspired by the soul of our times, and make use of the past and head towards the future.
